The reason I decided to get started with marketing my company, Flora Marketing, is because I knew I wanted to be involved in the local food landscape. I’m not a foodie, but I’ve made the effort to eat local whenever I can. I don’t subscribe to the idea that eating local is bad, but it is not necessarily good.
When I was a student in college, I decided to buy a large chunk of the produce and meat that I could only get in the city. I grew up eating vegetables that were grown by farmers across the country and I wanted to be able to make that impact in my own life. The whole idea made sense at the time because I didnt know what to do with the produce as a college student. I wasnt really sure if I could sell it or even eat it.
Well, now I know the answer and can actually do it. I started making my own food, in fact. I also moved to Colorado, and started raising my own food and growing my own veggies. Ive been living in Florida for the past three years. I grew my own veggies because Florida was more affordable. I wanted to be able to do something to change that.
With the exception of corn and tomatoes, vegetables in Florida are pretty inexpensive, and I’ve even been able to get good quality produce in the grocery store.
This isn’t necessarily a secret as far as food and growing crops goes, but the fact that Florida is so cheap and growing so many different kinds of veggies is pretty amazing. I’m not going to lie, it makes me a bit of a convert. I feel like I’m living a dream come true. I’ve just been too scared to admit I’ve done it.
Florida is a state with almost 2 million residents and just over 1 million acres devoted to agriculture, and this is really all you need to know about a place that seems to have so much going for it. This is one of the reasons I love living in Florida. With so much land and a growing population it seems like there aren’t that many people who can’t garden just a little and grow what they want.
