This is usually the first thing that a new consultant hears at the beginning of the work day. At the same time, though, it’s not the most important thing to know. It’s the third thing. But I’d like to talk about the first two, and the third thing first.
The first thing is what you pay. At its simplest this boils down to whether you’re charging by the hour, or by the project. The second thing is how often you work. At its simplest, this means how many hours you work per week, and how much you earn. This is a little tougher to quantify, but you can find a general idea by looking at the average salary of the top 40 highest paid consultants in the world.
As you can see, the average consultant earns around $90k per year. That’s a lot of money, but that makes it hard to compare with people who earn $20k per year. But what you can say is that the average consultant works longer hours than the average person for a lot more money.
That said, there are consultants who work insane hours, and there are consultants who work crazy hours. They work for the same company but are paid different amounts. But you can also find consultants who work for 2 different companies for the same amount, or they work for a company that pays them the same but they are paid to do different things.
I think as we have moved toward mobile devices and personal devices, the amount of work that can be done in a day has gone up. Many people (like me) have had to learn to do the things I did in the old days, but now I can do it as easily as I can do it on my iPhone. I can do all the things I did for the old company and it all just works because it is all done on my device.
Now that we are all using different devices, the question becomes how do we communicate with each other.
My company sends us a monthly email newsletter. This email is not for us to read and we don’t have to respond to the emails that come to us. Instead, we receive a few emails every month from different people from our marketing department. They are a fantastic way to get to know other marketing professionals in our department. We also send out blog posts in conjunction with the newsletter. This helps us promote and market many of the things that we do on a daily basis.
I don’t know what to tell you about this. I guess it means that marketing communications specialists receive a higher salary than do other professionals. I never would have guessed that.
