This can be as simple as a friend who’s in the same industry as you, or as complicated as a parent or supervisor in your field.
Not necessarily, but it definitely helps if you have someone in your corner who has the same goals for your project that you do, and a good way to do that is to ask someone you trust to tell you more about a particular project than someone you don’t.
This is the exact way I learned about marketing communications. I asked my friend Mike to help me with a project, and we ended up getting it all done in one afternoon. The project started out with me and my boss working together, and then Mike started a meeting with their marketing department to discuss the project. The next day was the marketing department’s birthday party, where they were taking turns giving gifts to everyone.
The marketing department was probably wondering what was going on because they were all so busy. But Mike was really happy I had done the project and that there was now a project to go to. He also told me that he likes to give gifts from time to time, so he decided to give me one of those.
I was glad that Mike was happy because I’m not sure it would have been possible for me to have done it without him. He was happy to help, he knew what I wanted, and he was the one who had the time to do the project.
That kind of self-awareness is rare in an administrative role. I spent most of the evening talking to my mom, who asked me what I’d done. She then asked me to tell her what I’d done so I could tell her when I was done. I went back to the building to see what I had accomplished.

Marketing is a critical component of any successful corporate brand, so it’s natural to think that marketers should be the primary people in charge of business communications.
Marketing is a business and a marketing professional doesn’t necessarily have to be the person who decides which messages to send. Marketing is a team effort. So, marketers might have input in the message that is to be sent to a customer or the message that should be sent to a client, but the ultimate responsibility lies with the marketing team.
