I have been in marketing for nearly 20 years, but never thought I’d be a full-time director. My first day on the job was in 2005, and it was a complete whirlwind. The day I got the job, I was in the middle of a divorce (which was never resolved) and it was a whirlwind to get back on my feet. For me, it was a whirlwind to get my business from a very small startup to a much larger company.
In general, marketing is a fun and rewarding job. It’s a good idea to have fun while you work, but at the end of the day it’s a job. The company you work for is a huge part of your job, and that’s no joke either. I don’t think anybody would argue that they’re not a fun job, and I’d like to think that people outside of marketing would agree.
Many people get a little lazy and start to work less than they really are worth. Often, this leads to their jobs being taken by people who actually do the work and who actually have the qualifications to do it. That is not really true of marketing, but it is true of most jobs. Its not easy to become a marketing director after dropping out of the marketing business to start a new one.
Thats why I recommend you spend as much time as possible thinking about what you want to do with your marketing career. Do you want to be a publicist? Maybe you want to be a publicist-in-training. Maybe you want to be a marketer. You get the idea. Most of us want to get paid to do things, not just work for money.
This is where the phrase “it’s not for everyone” comes in. That phrase isn’t about the job, but about the attitude. You want to do something that you want to do, but you want to be compensated for it. Do you want to be a travel agent? That’s a job for you. Do you want to be a marketing person? That’s the job for you.
Well, I don’t want to write in the news here, but I can say from my own experience that it’s not really the job, but the attitude that matters. I’ve spent about 14 years of my life trying to make a career out of being a travel agent. I’m not going to lie, it’s not been easy, but I’ve learned a lot and am still learning from my mistakes.
