Marketing is a tough job. There is a lot to learn about the craft and the field itself is a highly competitive one. I have the utmost respect for the people who do it day to day. When I am asked to teach marketing courses, I am often asked what it takes to be a good marketer.
That’s a good question. In my experience, a lot of marketing is done at senior management levels, at corporations of various sizes and types. It’s a job where people get together and talk strategy and goals, and they’re expected to be able to communicate those goals with a team, which is very similar to the way a coach is expected to coach.
Not surprisingly, the first thing that a marketing manager learns to do is to communicate effectively. From there, they learn to put together marketing plans and strategies that make sense and accomplish their goals. For me, this means that I have to be able to articulate the why behind my own tactics and how they work. I must be able to explain how my team members are going to work together to accomplish the goals I am setting for them.

But the hardest part is knowing that your marketing strategy is working. It’s a lot easier to say that the whole team has a cohesive plan when it is working. When they are out of sync, it is easy to blame them and let them know that you don’t have a good marketing strategy. The problem is that you don’t even know if the whole team is working together or if they are all at wits end.
If you want to be a good manager, you have to be willing to admit that your team is not working together. You have to be able to say that they are not working because of some problem or other. In this case, the problem is that marketing is the wrong word to describe it because the actual work they are doing is marketing. If you want to know what marketing looks like, go out to the mall and ask people what they do.
