As I have said before, the most important part of any business is the customer. Being a salesperson, you have to interact with a ton of people every day. In order to maximize your time and your effectiveness, you should try to learn as much about your customers as you can. I’m not talking about trying to understand them, but rather, try to understand how they think.
We’ve all seen the ads that companies use to attract customers. Salespeople, lawyers, and accountants often use phrases like “I’m hungry” in their ads, because that’s what they think their customers would say if they were hungry. In fact, when it’s time for a salesperson to make a deal, they’re pretty likely to say something like “I’m hungry and thirsty” or “I’m hungry and cold”.
The same thing goes for accountants. They use phrases like Im hungry and thirsty because what else can they say in an accountant voice? Thats what they would say if they actually were hungry and thirsty. The same applies to lawyers. When they talk about why they are hungry they would talk about their client.
The fact is that a huge percentage of marketing messages (and customer support) are not actually about what you want to say to your customers. The message is more about what you want to do for them. A salesperson who is hungry and thirsty might say, “I am not hungry and thirsty” but in reality she is hungry and thirsty. An accountant who says Im hungry and thirsty may actually be hungry and thirsty. The same goes for lawyers.
This is why it’s so important to ask questions and listen. You really can’t just say, “Hey, let’s try to sell you something, what are you hungry for?” because people will reply with a list of things that they want to do and a list of things that they don’t want to do. That’s why it’s so important to listen. The only way you can truly know what your customers really want is to ask them.
It is important to note that all of these things aren’t just marketing strategies that are used to sell something. They’re strategies that are used by people to help them figure out what they want to do in life and how they can help make it happen.

The way we think about marketing is to think of it as a chain of relationships. The first step in this chain is to know who the other side of the sales/relationship is. And then we can help them to learn from their mistakes. Marketing is about helping them to grow and learn.
