In the last couple of years, my favorite food marketing strategy has been to promote foods I actually enjoy. I always make myself stick to three foods a week and one of them will be something I enjoy. This can be a food that I would eat if I were out every day (think cheesecake or chocolate cake), but I’ll also stick to a whole-foods, fresh-from-the-farm and organic-based food that I want to eat.
That is one of the most important things to remember when it comes to food marketing. The food you eat is the food you want to eat, so you have to think about what you want to eat, how you want to eat it, what it tastes like, and what you want to do with it all. People who focus on the food they eat, not the food they want to eat, tend to get all sorts of ideas into their heads that are not aligned with their actual desires.
For instance, if you want to eat a healthy vegetarian diet, you can get some ideas for that on the Food Science website. But what about a vegetarian diet with a lot of fresh produce? Or a vegan diet that has a lot of meat? Or a strictly meat-free diet? Well, the Food Science website has some good ideas. But if these ideas are not in line with your actual desires you are going to need to be more flexible about what you eat.
You can get a lot of ideas into your head that are not aligned with your actual desires by getting them wrong. Like, say, you start thinking that if you eat hamburgers you will feel better, but you end up eating a lot of hamburgers anyway. Sure, this is a bit extreme, but you end up with a lot of hamburgers on your plate.
If you want to get really weird, you can even get ideas that are not aligned with your actual desires by thinking about a bunch of things that don’t work well together. For example, if you’re trying to gain weight, there are a bunch of weird things that you could do with your diet (but not a lot of weight) as long as the diet is long enough and you don’t eat it all at once after you get your new, leaner self.
These types of weird ideas are called “non foods marketing” because they take on a lot of meaning when you apply it to your cooking. When you eat the wrong thing for a certain time of the day, you may not even realize that you’ve made a bad decision until the next day when you’re trying to eat something else.
You really can take as much “non foods” marketing as you want, but you have to be smart about it. You can’t just say “I’m going to be eating healthy now; I’m a vegetarian” and expect to achieve your goals. A long-term diet should be designed around long-term goals.
The good news is that you can probably make more progress in your diet than you originally thought. When it comes to the non foods marketing, you can put the emphasis on what to eat to make sure youre getting all the nutrients you need, and if you dont want to eat that particular food, you can put the emphasis on trying to avoid it.
Well, that’s my theory anyway. So here’s how I’d do it. I would do my own non foods marketing.
What you eat and how much you eat is a great way to gauge how well youre tracking your goals. When trying to lose weight, say for example, you might think you should eat lots of green smoothies and veggies. Thats great. But if youre not tracking your diet and youre not eating the foods that are supposed to help you drop that excess weight, then youre probably in trouble.
