I’m not a ‘market research’ person. I’m more of a market analyst who does marketing research. I don’t have a formal ‘market research’ training, but I do a lot of it and I do it well. I’m also a former marketing research analyst so I feel I know how to put my marketing research to work on any given marketing opportunity.
Sure, this is the first step in the marketing research process, but it’s not the last. In my view, the next step is to do a market survey. It’s not the same as a market research question, but it is also not a dumb question. It has a number of potential answers and they are all valid. The only thing that matters is that your answers match what people in the market say they want.

If I own a car dealership and I want to sell my cars to people in my local area, then, yes, I will try to market my cars to people in my local area. If I own an automobile company and I want to sell my cars through my company, then, yes, I will try to sell cars through my company.

The market for a car dealership is the local area. The market for an automobile company is the state and/or country in which it has offices. Marketing of a product is marketing to customers.
